When it comes to living, Carmel, New York has no equal. The town of Carmel is located less than an hour north of New York City and about 10 miles west of Danbury, Connecticut in southeast Putnam County, one of the fastest growing counties in New York State. Carmel is home to the Putnam County Courthouse, the second oldest courthouse in New York that is still used today. The Courthouse was built in 1814 and the Putnam County jail was added fourteen years later. Just a stone’s throw away is the Gilead Cemetery with tombstones dating back to 1766. Take a stroll through the Carmel Historical Center for incredible stories from Carmel’s history, such as the story of “The Female Paul Revere”.Sybil Ludington was 16 and the daughter of a local militia commander. With news of the British invading Danbury, CT and her father’s troops scattered around the area, Sybil took on the duty of warning them of the British invasion.In the dead of night she rode 40 miles through Carmel, Mahopac and Stormville, yelling to the farmer militiamen to “muster at Ludington’s”. Not only is it fun to learn about Carmel history, but Carmel has a long history of providing fun. How about playing the links at Centennial Golf Course, a 27 hole championship course located on several hundred acres? Want to enjoy the great outdoors? Lake Gleneida offers fishing, ice fishing, and boating. Putnam County Park has many hiking trails and camp grounds. There is a lake in the park for summertime swimming and a magical wintertime ice skating rink. The area is a great place to enjoy all four seasons. For a bit of culture, be sure to visit the Putnam Children’s Museum, the Putnam County Theatre in the Barn, and the Putnam Symphony.
All in all, Carmel is a great place to start a family, raise the kids, or even retire. Carmel is the perfect place to be close to the city, but far enough away to enjoy a slower pace of a small town. Rich in American history, Carmel, New York is an ideal place to call home. |
