Located on the Hudson River 50 miles above Manhattan, the historic village of Cold Spring provides the peacefulness of life in the country and an abundance of the scenic beauty found in the Hudson Highlands. On Main Street–which radiates a special charm–fortunate residents can enjoy outdoor dining at some of the Hudson Valley’s finest restaurants, visit its unique antique shops, coffee houses and clothing stores, listen to live entertainment on the weekend, or spend an afternoon in a park on the river bank, complete with a tiled promenade and gazebo where they can take a seat and view the boats passing by.
The architecture in Cold Spring is a special treat. This 19th-century setting has become a popular, upscale hometown for commuters, as well as a favorite summer getaway for city dwellers. The architecture is an impressive blend of Colonial and Victorian styles, and the little gardens that surround them are a perfect accent to complete the theme in this historic village. The stores along Main Street have a distinctive artsy style, and there is a pleasant contrast of neighborhoods and housing types throughout the village.
Outdoor enthusiasts will find plenty to do here. In season, young and old alike enjoy the strains of summer concerts, part of the “Bandstand Series” that has become so popular in recent years. The trolley is also a fun and favorite way for visitors to get around town. They, along with locals, can participate in a wide range of outdoor activities, including hiking, bicycling, kayaking and motor boating, sailing, or going on the Commander for a cruise along the Hudson River.
The possibilities here for hikers are endless, with Breakneck Ridge and nearby Storm King Mountain presenting a special challenge to the most experienced hikers.
Clarence Fahnestock Memorial State Park is not to be missed. One of the highlights of this 14,086-acre outdoor facility is its beautiful beach at Canopus Lake, and the Winter Park includes a sledding area and trails for snowshoeing and cross-country skiing. Formed along natural rock ridges, the popular campground provides visitors with both privacy and peace, and an area has also been set aside for RV camping. |
