Brewster, New York, which lies within the Town of Southeast, is located about fifty miles north of New York City, in Putnam County. The area was originally settled by families from Cape Cod and Long Island who began moving their homes to the East Branch area of the Croton River.
The Village of Brewster was incorporated in 1894 and named for Walter Brewster, a local builder. Walter Brewster was responsible for bringing the railroad through the town, as well as building churches, stores, and mapping out routes for the stagecoach to run from Danbury, Connecticut.
Just like in Walter Brewster’s time, you could say that ’all roads lead to Brewster’ even today. All major roads and Interstates are just minutes away, and two separate train stations make for an easy New York City commute no matter where you live. Brewster is only an hour north of New York City by car or train, and just over the state line from Danbury, Connecticut.
With brand new water and sewer lines, artistic renovations, and pedestrian friendly streets, Brewster provides a unique blend of small town charm and warmth with all the modern assets. The local citizen groups take an active role in evaluating and integrating state-of-the-art communication and transportation systems to ensure Brewster's status as an economic hub of the Harlem Valley.
Brewster has something to offer everyone. If you are looking for something to do on a Saturday, be sure to take a stroll down to the Brewster Farmer's Market on Main Street, enjoy the historic library, or simply spend some time fishing on world-class trout streams. Brewster is home to museums such as the Tilly Foster Farm Museum and private gardens that are showcased annually on the Putnam County Secret Garden Tour.
