Kent, NY Back
The picturesque town of Kent, also known as Kent Lakes, is located 50 miles north of New York City in Putnam County. Kent was originally a part of Frederickstown, but was separated in 1788 and renamed Fredericks in 1795. In 1817, the name was changed once again to its current name in honor of the Kent family.

Kent is known for its rural countryside, scenic lakes, ponds, and mountain ranges. Hamlets in Kent include Allen Corners, Berkshire Terrace, Farmers Mills, Lake Carmel, Kent Corners, Kent Hills, and others, with population totaling approximately 14,000 people.

The many lakes in Kent are the pride and joy of residents, including the Sagamore Lake, Kentwood Lake, Lake Tibet, Palmer Lake, China Lake, and White Pond. Powerboats are not allowed on the lakes, ensuring their tranquil beauty.

The Clarence Fahnestock Memorial State Park, on the west side of town, is a popular place for outdoor lovers. This beautiful park, spanning 14, 086 acres, offers hiking trails, biking, campgrounds, picnic areas, and opportunities for boating, hunting, and fishing. The jewel of the park is the beautiful beach on Canopus Lake. Other Kent parks include the 973-acre Wonder Lake State Park on the east side of town, as well as several smaller parks around town.

Kent is also home to vital reservoirs, including Boyd’s Corners and West Branch, which supply water to New York City and Westchester County. A significant portion of land has been purchased by New York City for conservation as a result.

Another point of interest is the Mount Nimham Fire Tower. Standing high at 1200 feet, the spectacular view from the tallest tower in the state includes the Empire State Building in New York City, the Berkshires, and the Catskills. The tower is currently under volunteer restoration.
